May 27
This is opening gala night! Mix and mingle at the opening of the Ingmar Bergman International Theatre Festival. The day begins with the official opening ceremony and two unique photo exhibitions. Then follows the premiere of the Festival’s first major performance, Kreten en Gefluister (Cries and Whispers) with the Dutch company Toneelgroep. In the evening the red carpet will be rolled out for one of the year’s biggest cultural events – the gala opening night at Berns Salonger.

Festival host: Jonas Malmsjö
Cate Blanchett is co-producer of the reading of Ingmar Bergman’s Through a Glass Darkly directed by Michael Attenborough, one of the absolute highlights of the Festival. The day begins with a breakfast meeting with the Ambassador of the Day – one of Bergman’s favourite actors. The rest of the day is dedicated to various takes on Ingmar Bergman’s creative work. There will be a radio drama broadcast directed by Bergman, talks and seminars organized by the Bergman Foundation, Cries and Whispers at the Main Stage, open-air cinema commented by a psychologist and the grand opening of the festival watering hole – the Persona Bar at Berns Salonger.

Festival host: Lena Endre
Cate Blanchett is co-producer of the reading of Ingmar Bergman’s Through a Glass Darkly directed by Michael Attenborough – one of the festival highlights! The lesser known aspects of Ingmar Bergman are discussed in the Bergman Foundation symposium “The Unknown Bergman”. Also breakfast meeting, open-air cinema and Friday night at the Persona Bar.
May 30
Festival host: Stina Ekblad
Today’s highlight is the first of two performances of From the Lives of the Marionettes at the Main Stage. The Bergman Festival challenges the Stockholm Marathon by hosting a marathon screening of Scenes from a Marriage. Also silent movie and live music with Matti Bye, and why not a glass or two at the Persona Bar at Berns Salonger.
May 31
Festival host: Julia Dufvenius
A French exclusive guest performance is shown at Dramaten’s Small Stage of Marguerite Duras’ La Douleur (The War: A Memoir), enthusiastically received by audiences and critics in France. Main Stage shows another acclaimed production, From the Lives of the Marionettes. The youth club Lava’s cultural effort aimed at the next generation of theatre goers is called “I Can’t Believe it’s Bergman”. Films, performances, music-making and various events will turn up during the course of the festival. Why not join in!
June 1
Festival Host: Gunnel Lindblom
Yet another great opportunity to see world-class drama. The Festival presents an exclusive French guest performance at the Small Stage of Marguerite Duras’ La Douleur (The War: A Memoir), which was enthusiastically received by audience and critics in France. More plays and meetings with actors are scheduled throughout the rest of the day. Also breakfast meeting with the Ambassador of the Day. Don’t miss the photo exhibition made for the Academy Awards in 2008, visit it in the main foyer at Dramaten, or some of Bengt Wanselius’s frozen moments on Raoul Wallenbergs torg.
June 2
Festival host: Elin Klinga
The photo exhibition “The Man who Asked Hard Questions” was originally made for the Academy Awards in 2008. This is the first and last time it will be shown in Sweden. Visit the exhibition in the main foyer at Dramaten. In Raoul Wallenbergs torg is another exhibition with Dramaten’s own photographers’ documentation of Bergman’s work at the theatre.
June 3
Festival host: Staffan Valdemar Holm
Eraritjaritjaka is the unusual name of Heiner Goebbels’ play based on texts by Elias Canetti. The premiere takes place at the Main Stage, Dramaten. Also open rehearsal of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage with Jonas Karlsson and Livia Millhagen directed by Stefan Larsson. And of course breakfast meeting, talks, radio drama and Persona Bar at Berns.
June 4
Festival host: Björn Granath
Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s leading actress Barbara Sukowa performs in Stockholm in Barbara Frey’s and Salzburger Festspiele’s production of Heiner Müller’s Quartett at Elverket. There will also be a second performance of Heiner Goebbels’ Eraritjaritjaka, which is based on texts by Elias Canetti. Start the day with a breakfast meeting hosted by the Ambassador of the Day and end it at Persona Bar at Berns Salonger.
June 5
Festival Host: Maria Bonnevie
This is the last chance of attending the open rehearsals of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage with Jonas Karlsson and Livia Millhagen directed by Stefan Larsson. It is also the last chance to see the acclaimed Quartett with the German leading actress Barbara Sukowa. Also breakfast meeting with one of Bergman’s favourite actors, open-air cinema on the roof of Kulturhuset as well as mixing and mingling at Persona Bar, Berns Salonger.
June 6
Festival host: Marie-Louise Ekman
The grand finale takes place on Sweden’s national day with the Bergman Festival offering one of its highlights: The Obama Victory Speech Project, an international theatre workshop led by Staffan Valdemar Holm. The Festival ends with a party and a concert featuring a, for now, secret guest.
